Novi Sad and Petrovaradin Fortress
For the fortress, get off at Petrovaradin: the station is on the right bank of the Danube, right below the fortress. The SOKO gets there from Belgrade Centre in about 39 minutes, and Regio and Regio Express trains stop there too. For central Novi Sad, trains run on to the TPS Novi Sad stop (SOKO about 47 minutes), about 4 km from the centre, served by city bus line 4. From Petrovaradin, city buses cross the Varadin bridge into the centre.
The fortress as it stands today was built between 1692 and 1780. On its clock tower the hands are reversed: the long hand shows the hours and the short one the minutes, so fishermen on the Danube could read the time from afar. Beneath it run more than 16 km of underground passages. More on the Novi Sad stations in our Novi Sad station guide.
Today's departures: Belgrade Centre - Petrovaradin, Belgrade - Novi Sad. Return: Petrovaradin - Belgrade Centre, Novi Sad - Belgrade.
Sremski Karlovci
Sremski Karlovci has its own station on the Belgrade - Novi Sad line, one stop before Petrovaradin. Regio and Regio Express trains between Belgrade Centre and Novi Sad call there, and the ride takes about 50 minutes. The SOKO and Inter Regio trains do not stop, so check the train type when you pick a departure.
The Karlovci Gymnasium, the oldest Serbian grammar school, was founded here in 1791, and the town is also home to the Patriarchate palace. With Petrovaradin as the next stop, Karlovci and the fortress fit easily into one day.
Today's departures: Belgrade Centre - Sremski Karlovci. Return: departures on the Sremski Karlovci station page.
Subotica
The SOKO takes about 1 hour 34 minutes from Belgrade Centre to Subotica, and Inter Regio trains about 1 hour 50 minutes. The station is in the town centre, on Bose Milićević street.
The main reason to go is the City Hall, built from 1908 to 1912 in the Hungarian Secession style, a branch of Art Nouveau, to a design by the Budapest architects Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab. Cross-border trains to Szeged also leave from Subotica, so you can extend the trip over the border: see Subotica to Szeged by train. More on the line in our Belgrade to Subotica guide.
Today's departures: Belgrade - Subotica. Return: Subotica - Belgrade.
Pančevo
Pančevo is the closest trip: the Panvoz train takes about 25 to 30 minutes from Pančevo glavna to Belgrade Centre, over the Pančevo bridge. In Pančevo it calls at Pančevo Vojlovica, Pančevo Strelište, Pančevo varoš and Pančevo glavna. Panvoz is not part of Belgrade's free public transport, so you need a Srbija Voz ticket.
The town on the Tamiš has the Đorđe Vajfert Brewery Museum (the brewery was founded in 1722 and is the oldest in today's Serbia) and the National Museum, in the former town hall. More on the line in our Panvoz guide.
Today's departures: Belgrade - Pančevo. Return: Pančevo - Belgrade.
Šargan Eight
The longest trip. Take the train to Užice, about 3 to 3.5 hours via Valjevo and Požega; from the bus station next to the railway station, bus 12A runs to Mokra Gora. The Nostalgija heritage train starts at Mokra Gora station. In 2026, Srbija Voz runs the Nostalgija train until 15 November, with fewer departures towards the end of the season.
It is a long day, so take an early morning train and check your return before you set off, or stay the night in Užice or Mokra Gora. The season, departures and the bus are in our Šargan Eight guide.
Today's departures: Belgrade - Užice. Return: Užice - Belgrade.
Tips for a day out by train

- Before you leave, check vozovi.rs for delays reported by other passengers.
