How to travel from Belgrade to Vienna by train today
Until the direct train starts, the route runs through Hungary with three changes:
- Belgrade Centre to Subotica: the SOKO fast train or an Inter Regio. Departures are on the Belgrade - Subotica page.
- Subotica to Szeged: the cross-border train, with border control on board. Times are on the Subotica - Szeged page.
- Szeged to Budapest: MÁV Napfény InterCity trains run every hour to Budapest-Nyugati.
- Budapest to Vienna: direct ÖBB and MÁV trains (Railjet and EuroCity) to Wien Hauptbahnhof take a little under three hours. They mostly leave from Budapest-Keleti, so allow time to cross the city from Nyugati to Keleti by public transport.
With all the changes the trip takes most of a day, so an overnight stop in Budapest is practical. The first part of the journey is covered in our Belgrade to Budapest by train guide.
