Taking a bike on trains in Serbia: which lines allow it

The answer is usually yes, but the exceptions matter

In the timetable we publish, around eight in ten departures carry a marker for bicycles. For most journeys the answer is simply yes, and you do not need to hunt for a special service.

The remaining two in ten are not scattered at random, though. They cluster on a few specific corridors, and those happen to be the ones cyclists need most. So it pays to know which.

Routes that currently do not take bikes

According to timetable data as of 2 September 2026, no departure on these routes is marked for bicycle carriage:

• Subotica to Szeged, the entire cross-border line into Hungary;
• Zemun to Pančevo Vojlovica, every departure in both directions;
• Belgrade to Bar, services to Montenegro and back.

Pay particular attention to Novi Sad to Sombor. There the marker varies by individual departure and even by direction of travel: some trains carry bikes, others on the same line do not. It is the one route with no simple rule, and the one where you genuinely have to check departure by departure.

Where the train complements the bike best

The Belgrade to Novi Sad corridor is the easy case: every departure in the current timetable is marked for bicycles. The same holds for trains towards Niš and the south.

For the Danube cycle route that is useful, because the train covers the stretch through Belgrade and out of the city, which is the least pleasant part to ride. You can also reach Subotica with your bike, but the last hop to the Hungarian border needs another plan, since the Szeged train does not take bicycles.

How to check a specific departure

1. Search the route and date on vozovi.rs.
2. Open the departure that suits you.
3. Look for the bicycle icon in the train detail row. If it is there, that departure is marked for bicycle carriage.
4. If there is no marker, pick another departure or confirm with the operator.

The marker comes from the official timetable and can differ from conditions on the day, especially for seasonal, overnight and cross-border trains. Space for bikes in a carriage is limited, so the marker means carriage is provided for, not that a place is guaranteed.

Practical notes for the platform

• Arrive early: loading a bike takes longer than stepping on with a backpack.
• Take the panniers off before boarding, the doorway is narrower than it looks.
• The bike goes in the vestibule by the doors or the space provided for it, not in the aisle between seats.
• Avoid the morning and late afternoon peaks into Belgrade if you have wheels.
• Confirm the fee and registration when you buy your ticket from the operator.

If you are arriving from abroad

The Danube route enters Serbia from the north, so most cyclists arrive from the Hungarian side. Because the Szeged to Subotica train does not take bicycles, plan that border ahead: ride across it, then board in Subotica, from where carriage onward to Novi Sad and Belgrade is provided for.
